John Giannaros, formerly signed by Sony & Mushroom Records was approached by ‘Louie and the Party Boys” to write a footy song with a difference.
Inspired by the wonderful anthem by Mike Brady "Up there Cazaly" and Queen’s legendary song “We will rock you” John was determined to write a song for the generation of today.
The lyrics of the song came about whilst John was waiting for a cab outside a Sydney pub. An AFL game between Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans was being broadcast with patrons of the pub jeering and booing , telling the pub owners to put on the rugby – the real football!
The incident had brought home to John just what our great game is all about and whilst on a plane back to Melbourne he penned the chorus “Proud to be a footy fan, footy born in my homeland” and from that the song ‘Aussie Rules’ song was born.
John teamed up with Manny Perez from “Louie & the Party Boys” to produce some powerful guitar rifts that would drive the song in the vein of ACDC, Dire Straits and Jet.
The lyrics embraced all that make our great game unique, including the aboriginal football champions that graced our arenas. John invited Stan Yarramunua, a renowned aboriginal didgeridoo player (who has worked with iconic acts such as ACDC and more recently Stevie Wonder) to join the project. Stan’s stirring contribution took the song to another level and with the great vocal talent of Louie Lee Feltrin, front man of “Louie and the Party Boys”, the song was complete.
The words of ‘Aussie Rules’ embraces the champion athletes, devoted supporters and their children and above all the great game and spectacle that is Aussie Rules.
